Keys are important objects in any story. They come in all shapes and sizes. They can lock or unlock things. We have keys for our houses, cars, and valuables. They can be symbolic of so many things….mystery, curiosity, freedom, privilege. Some cultures believe that the key symbolizes authority to exercise certain powers over a given community. People also believe that possessing a key indicates being knowledgeable in issues that most people do not know about. Keys open locks and allow access to things that would otherwise be unattainable. Yet, they also keep valuables and secrets safe from others. We lock our diaries to protect our inner most thoughts and feelings. They provide us with security: we can lock our homes and belongings and know that no one else has the key. We all hold keys both physically and symbolically. The way I look at it is that every single one of us is a Key Keeper. We hold secrets in our hearts and our minds and it is up to us to share the keys to our inner secrets.
